What Is Ikat? Odisha's Bandha Tie-and-Dye Weaving Explained

Odisha ikat silk saree

You may have heard the word ikat used for everything from sarees to cushion covers. In Odisha, this ancient technique is called bandha, and it is the heart of famous weaves like Sambalpuri, Pasapalli and Khandua.

Ikat in Simple Words

In most printed fabrics, the design is applied after the cloth is made. In ikat, the design is created before weaving. Weavers tie small bundles of yarn tightly with thread or rubber strips, then dye them. The tied parts resist the dye. By repeating this tying and dyeing in different colours, the pattern is "pre-painted" onto the yarn. When the yarn is finally woven, the design appears on the cloth.

Types of Ikat

  • Warp ikat: Only the lengthwise (warp) threads are tie-dyed.
  • Weft ikat: Only the crosswise (weft) threads are tie-dyed. Much of Odisha's figurative work uses weft ikat.
  • Double ikat: Both warp and weft are tie-dyed and must line up exactly. This is the most difficult form and is seen in some Pasapalli and fine Sambalpuri sarees.

Why Odisha Ikat Is Special

Odisha's weavers are known for curvilinear and figurative ikat – fish, conch shells, flowers, animals, even lines of poetry – rather than only geometric shapes. Sambalpuri ikat also enjoys Geographical Indication (GI) protection, recognising its unique origin.

How to Recognise Genuine Handwoven Ikat

  • Feathered edges: Motifs have a soft, slightly blurred outline – a natural result of dye seeping along the yarn.
  • Same on both sides: Because the yarn itself is dyed, the pattern is visible on the reverse too. Printed "ikat" is usually faded on the back.
  • Small irregularities: Tiny variations show the human hand at work.

Why Ikat Takes Time

Tying and dyeing the yarn for a single saree can take longer than the weaving itself. Patterns are planned thread by thread, often by families who have passed the skill down for generations.
