Tussar silk (also written tussah or tasar) is loved for its natural golden-beige colour and rich, slightly textured feel. Odisha is one of the important tussar-producing regions of India.
What Is Tussar Silk?
Tussar is a "wild" or non-mulberry silk. It is produced by silkworms that feed on the leaves of forest trees such as arjun and asan, rather than on mulberry leaves. Much of this rearing is done by forest and tribal communities in eastern and central India.
Tussar vs Mulberry Silk
- Colour: Tussar has a natural honey-gold tone; mulberry silk is naturally white and takes bright dyes more easily.
- Texture: Tussar is slightly coarser with a matte, earthy sheen; mulberry silk is smoother and glossier.
- Weight: Tussar is generally lighter and more breathable.
- Look: Tussar feels understated and artistic; mulberry silk feels grand and formal.
Why Choose a Tussar Saree?
- Elegant enough for festivals, yet comfortable for long hours
- A perfect base for hand painting, Pattachitra art and temple borders
- Looks sophisticated for formal events, office functions and evening parties
Styling Ideas
- Pair a natural tussar saree with a contrast blouse in maroon, black or bottle green.
- Add oxidised silver or antique gold jewellery for an artistic look.
- A tussar saree with a temple-border pallu is lovely for pujas.
How to Care for Tussar
Dry clean for best results. Iron on low heat with a cloth in between, and store wrapped in muslin away from moisture.
