Sambalpuri and Pochampally sarees are both made using ikat – the art of tie-dyeing yarn before weaving. They are often confused, but each has its own identity.
Where They Come From
- Sambalpuri: Western Odisha – Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur and nearby weaving clusters.
- Pochampally: Bhoodan Pochampally and surrounding villages in Telangana.
Both weaves are protected with Geographical Indication (GI) tags.
Motifs and Design Style
- Sambalpuri is known for curvy, figurative motifs inspired by temples and nature – conch shells, wheels, flowers, fish, animals – along with the chessboard Pasapalli pattern.
- Pochampally is best known for bold geometric patterns – diamonds, zigzags and sharp repeating shapes.
Colours
Sambalpuri sarees often use traditional combinations like red, black and white, along with rich earthy tones. Pochampally sarees are known for vivid, high-contrast colour combinations.
Borders and Pallu
Sambalpuri sarees frequently feature temple borders and elaborate pallus with storytelling motifs. Pochampally sarees often carry the geometric design across the body, border and pallu in a continuous flow.
Which Should You Choose?
- Love traditional, symbolic motifs? Choose Sambalpuri.
- Prefer modern, graphic patterns? Choose Pochampally.
- Both are excellent investments in genuine Indian handloom.
