Pattachitra Saree: History, Motifs and How to Style Odisha's Painted Art Saree

Pattachitra Saree: History, Motifs and How to Style Odisha's Painted Art Saree

Few sarees tell a story the way a Pattachitra saree does. Inspired by one of Odisha’s oldest art forms, these sarees carry scenes of gods, flowers, animals and folk tales across the pallu and border. If you love art, culture and statement fashion, here is everything you need to know before you buy one.

What is Pattachitra?

Pattachitra (also written Patachitra) comes from two Sanskrit words: patta (cloth) and chitra (picture). It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting from Odisha, closely linked with the worship of Lord Jagannath in Puri. The village of Raghurajpur near Puri is famous as a heritage crafts village where many families of chitrakars (painters) still practise the art. Odisha Pattachitra has also received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Common Pattachitra motifs

  • Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra – the most iconic theme.
  • Krishna Leela – Radha-Krishna, Krishna with cows and gopis.
  • Dashavatara – the ten avatars of Vishnu.
  • Nature – lotus, peacocks, elephants, fish and the tree of life.
  • Decorative borders – fine floral and geometric frames.

Types of Pattachitra sarees

Hand-painted Pattachitra saree

Artists paint directly on silk or tussar using fine brushes. Each piece is one of a kind and highly collectible.

Pattachitra cotton saree

A lighter, everyday option that still shows off the art – great for office, college events and cultural programmes.

How to style a Pattachitra saree

  • Let the art speak: choose a plain, solid-colour blouse that picks one colour from the painting.
  • Jewellery: temple gold or oxidised silver jhumkas work best; avoid heavy necklaces that cover the pallu.
  • Drape: an open pallu or a neat pleated pallu shows the motifs clearly in photos.
  • Occasions: Rath Yatra, Diwali, Durga Puja, weddings, art exhibitions and cultural events.

How to care for a Pattachitra saree

  • Dry-clean only, especially for hand-painted pieces.
  • Never scrub or soak the painted area.
  • Iron on the reverse side on low heat, with a cotton cloth in between.
  • Store folded in a muslin cloth; refold every few months.

Why buy Pattachitra from a trusted Odisha seller?

Digital prints of Pattachitra designs are common. A genuine piece shows fine brushwork or careful craftsmanship, natural variations and rich detailing. At URVI AURA we source directly from Odisha artisans and weavers, so you get authentic work while supporting the artists who keep this tradition alive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pattachitra the same as Madhubani?

No. Madhubani is a folk art from Bihar. Pattachitra is from Odisha (and Bengal has its own Patachitra style), with distinct themes and bold borders.

Does a Pattachitra saree make a good gift?

Yes – it is one of the most memorable gifts for mothers, brides and art lovers, in India and abroad.
