Nuakhai Juhar: Western Odisha's Harvest Festival and What to Wear

Sambalpuri saree for Nuakhai

Nuakhai is the most important festival of western Odisha. The name comes from nua (new) and khai (food) – it celebrates eating the first rice of the new harvest.

When Is Nuakhai Celebrated?

Nuakhai is usually celebrated in late August or September, on the day after Ganesh Chaturthi. The exact moment for offering the new grain is fixed by priests each year.

Traditions

  • Offering to the deity: The new rice (nabanna) is first offered to the presiding deity – in Sambalpur, to Goddess Samaleswari – and then to family deities.
  • Family gathering: Families come together, often travelling long distances, to share the nabanna.
  • Nuakhai Juhar: After the meal, younger members seek blessings from elders, and people greet each other with "Nuakhai Juhar," mending old differences.
  • Folk dance and music: Celebrations include Sambalpuri folk dances like Dalkhai and Rasarkeli.

What to Wear

Since Sambalpuri weaving comes from this very region, Nuakhai is the perfect day to wear it proudly:

  • Women: A new Sambalpuri silk or cotton saree – Pasapalli, Bomkai or classic ikat.
  • Men: A Sambalpuri shirt or kurta, or a traditional dhoti with a Sambalpuri gamuchha.
  • Kids: Sambalpuri frocks, kurtas and shirts.
  • Families: Coordinated Sambalpuri outfits look wonderful in festival photos.

Gift Ideas

New clothes are an important part of Nuakhai. A Sambalpuri saree or shirt is a meaningful gift for family members.
