Weaving Is a Family Tradition

In Odisha's weaving villages, the craft is often passed down from parents to children. Men and women share the work – preparing yarn, tying and dyeing for ikat, setting up the loom and weaving. Many weavers learnt their first patterns as children, watching their elders.

From Yarn to Saree

1. Preparing the yarn: Cotton or silk yarn is cleaned, sized and wound.
2. Designing: Patterns are planned – often from memory and tradition.
3. Tie and dye: For ikat sarees, yarn sections are tied and dyed again and again to create the design.
4. Setting the warp: Thousands of threads are carefully arranged on the loom.
5. Weaving: Line by line, the saree takes shape over days or weeks.
6. Finishing: The saree is checked, folded and made ready for you.
