Khandua Saree: The Sacred Silk of Lord Jagannath

Khandua silk saree from Odisha

Few sarees carry as much spiritual meaning as the Khandua saree. Woven from fine silk using the ikat technique, Khandua is closely linked to the worship of Lord Jagannath in Puri and is one of Odisha's most cherished textiles.

The Story Behind Khandua

Khandua is traditionally woven by weaving communities in Nuapatna and Maniabandha in Cuttack district. For generations, special Khandua cloth bearing lines of the Gita Govinda – Jayadeva's devotional poem – has been woven and offered to Lord Jagannath. This sacred association is why many Odia families consider a Khandua saree auspicious for weddings and religious ceremonies.

Khandua silk is also recognised with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which protects the name and its origin in Odisha.

Signature Motifs and Colours

  • Bold ikat patterns: Khandua uses tie-and-dye ikat, giving motifs a soft, slightly feathered edge.
  • Temple and Nabakothi designs: Temple borders and grid patterns are classic.
  • Elephants, lions, flowers and creepers: Traditional motifs symbolising strength and abundance.
  • Rich colours: Red, orange, yellow and deep maroon are traditional favourites, though modern weavers also offer pastels.

Why Khandua Is Perfect for Special Occasions

Khandua silk is lightweight compared to many heavy silks, drapes softly and has a subtle sheen. That makes it comfortable through long wedding rituals and festival days such as Rath Yatra, while still looking grand in photographs.

How to Wear a Khandua Saree

  • Pair a red or orange Khandua with traditional Odia silver filigree (tarakasi) or gold jewellery.
  • Choose a matching or contrast silk blouse in a shade from the border.
  • Keep makeup classic – a red bindi and kajal complement the saree's devotional roots.

Caring for Khandua Silk

Dry clean only, store wrapped in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, and avoid hanging silk for long periods. Keep it away from direct sunlight to protect the natural dyes.
