How to Store Silk Sarees So They Last for Generations

Silk sarees are often passed from mother to daughter – but only if they are stored with care. Washing is only half the story; how you store a saree between wears matters just as much.

1. Wrap Each Saree in Muslin or Cotton

Avoid plastic bags and plastic covers, which trap moisture and can cause yellowing. Wrap each silk saree in a soft muslin or old cotton cloth so it can breathe.

2. Refold Every Few Months

Silk tends to crease and weaken along the same fold lines over time. Take your sarees out every two to three months, air them in the shade and refold them along different lines.

3. Keep Them Dry

• Store sarees in a dry cupboard, away from damp walls and bathrooms.
• During monsoon, air your cupboard regularly and use silica gel sachets.
• Never store a saree that is even slightly damp or sweaty – air it first.

4. Protect from Insects Naturally

Place neem leaves, cloves or cedar blocks wrapped in cloth on the shelves. Avoid putting naphthalene balls in direct contact with silk, as they can damage the fabric and leave a strong smell.

5. Avoid Hanging for Long Periods

Heavy silk sarees can stretch and lose shape if hung for months. Folding is best. If you must hang, use a padded hanger and fold the saree over it.

6. Take Special Care of Zari

Wrap zari borders and pallus with an extra layer of muslin so the metallic threads don't rub against other fabric and tarnish.

7. Keep Away from Sunlight and Perfume

Direct sunlight fades natural dyes. Spray perfume and deodorant before draping, not directly on the saree.
