Destination weddings, festival trips and visits home often mean packing several sarees. Here's how to keep them fresh and crease-free.
1. Fold Smart
Fold the saree lengthwise into a long strip, then fold it into a neat rectangle. Avoid sharp creases on the pallu and borders by placing them on the outside.
2. Wrap in Muslin or Tissue
Wrap each saree in a muslin cloth or acid-free tissue paper. This prevents colour transfer and protects zari.
3. Use Saree Covers or Zip Pouches
Fabric saree covers keep each saree separate and organised. Label them by event so you know what to unpack first.
4. Pack Flat and on Top
Place sarees flat at the top of your suitcase, away from heavy shoes and toiletries. Rolling works well for cotton sarees but can crease silk.
5. Keep Blouses with Their Sarees
Fold each blouse with its matching saree and petticoat so outfits are ready to wear.
6. Protect from Spills
Pack liquids in sealed bags and keep them far from your sarees. Perfume should never be packed directly with silk.
7. Bring a Travel Kit
- Safety pins and a few spare hooks
- A small travel steamer or ask the hotel for an iron
- A spare petticoat
8. Unpack Immediately
Hang or lay sarees flat as soon as you arrive so any light creases relax.
