How to Iron and Steam Handloom Sarees Without Damaging Them

Neatly pressed handloom saree

A well-ironed saree drapes better, holds pleats longer and looks more polished. But the wrong heat can scorch silk or tarnish zari. Here's how to do it right.

General Rules

  • Always check the fabric before setting the iron temperature.
  • Iron on the reverse side whenever possible.
  • Use a clean, white cotton pressing cloth between the iron and delicate fabric.
  • Keep the iron moving – don't let it rest in one spot.

Cotton Handloom Sarees

  • Use medium-high heat.
  • Iron while the saree is slightly damp, or sprinkle water evenly.
  • For a crisp finish, use a light starch – especially for office wear.

Silk Sarees

  • Use low heat (silk setting).
  • Always use a pressing cloth; never spray water directly on silk, as it can leave watermarks.
  • Press gently rather than rubbing back and forth.

Tussar Silk

Treat like silk: low heat, pressing cloth and reverse side. Tussar's natural texture is part of its charm, so don't over-press.

Zari and Thread Work

  • Iron zari borders and extra-weft motifs from the reverse side only.
  • Place a soft towel underneath raised designs so they don't flatten.

Steaming

A garment steamer is a great option for silk – it removes creases without direct heat. Hold it a few inches from the fabric and let the saree hang while steaming.

Pressing Pleats

After draping, run a warm iron (with a pressing cloth for silk) lightly over the pleats and pallu for sharp, lasting folds.
