As handloom sarees grow in popularity, machine-made (powerloom) and printed imitations have flooded the market. They may look similar in photos, but the difference in quality, feel and value is huge. Here is how to spot a genuine handloom.
1. Look for Small Irregularities
Handwoven fabric has tiny, natural variations in the weave and motifs. Powerloom fabric is perfectly uniform, almost too perfect. Slight unevenness is a sign of the human hand – not a defect.
2. Check the Reverse Side
In handwoven ikat, the yarn is dyed before weaving, so the design shows clearly on both sides. Printed imitations are often pale or blank on the back.
3. Examine the Selvedge (Edge)
Handloom sarees usually have firm, slightly uneven edges. Powerloom edges tend to be very straight and sometimes have small pin holes along the side from the machine.
4. Feel the Fabric
Handloom cotton feels soft, airy and gets softer with each wash. Powerloom fabrics, especially those mixed with synthetic yarn, can feel stiff, smooth or slightly plasticky.
5. Look at Motif Edges
Ikat motifs on a true handloom have soft, feathered edges. Sharp, crisp outlines often indicate printing or machine work.
6. Consider the Price and the Handloom Mark
Handweaving takes days or weeks, so a very cheap "pure silk handloom" saree is a red flag. Some genuine handloom products also carry India's Handloom Mark or a GI certification label – ask the seller about these.
Why It Matters
Choosing real handloom supports weaver families, keeps centuries-old skills alive and gives you a saree with better breathability and longevity. Every handloom purchase helps a craft survive.
