Among Odisha's many handloom treasures, the Bomkai saree (also called Sonepuri) stands out for its rich, embroidered look – even though every motif is actually woven on the loom. If you love sarees that feel traditional yet striking, Bomkai deserves a place in your wardrobe.
Where Does the Bomkai Saree Come From?
The weave takes its name from Bomkai village in Ganjam district in southern Odisha. Over time the craft travelled to western Odisha, where weavers of the Subarnapur (Sonepur) region refined it and began weaving it in silk as well as cotton. Today you will find both earthy cotton Bomkais for daily wear and lustrous silk Bomkais for weddings and festivals.
What Makes Bomkai Unique?
- Extra-weft motifs: Designs are added using extra threads while weaving, so they stand slightly raised from the base fabric, giving an embroidered effect.
- Temple borders: Many Bomkais carry the triangular phoda kumbha temple border, a motif deeply connected to Odisha's temple architecture.
- Nature and folk motifs: Fish, tortoise, lotus, rudraksha beads and peacocks are common – each carrying meanings of prosperity and good fortune.
- Ikat combinations: Some Bomkais combine an ikat body with a thread-work pallu for extra richness.
How a Bomkai Saree Is Woven
A Bomkai is woven on a traditional pit or frame loom. While the base fabric is woven normally, the weaver inserts additional coloured threads by hand to build each motif row by row. This slow, careful process means a single silk Bomkai can take many days to complete – which is why no two are ever exactly alike.
How to Style a Bomkai Saree
- For festivals: Pair a silk Bomkai with gold temple jewellery and a contrast blouse that picks up a colour from the border.
- For the office: Choose a cotton Bomkai in muted tones with a simple elbow-sleeve blouse and minimal silver jewellery.
- For weddings: Deep red, maroon and bottle green silk Bomkais with heavy pallus look regal for both brides and guests.
Caring for Your Bomkai
Dry clean silk Bomkais for the first few washes. Cotton Bomkais can be gently hand washed in cold water with a mild detergent. Always store them folded in a cotton cloth, and refold every few months so the extra-weft motifs don't crease permanently.
